Tracer Wire Installation Guide

Getting Ready

First, call your local utility locating service. They will mark where other pipes and wires are buried. Draw a simple map showing where your new wire will go. Get all your tools ready before you start.

Digging the Trench

Dig a straight ditch about 1 foot deep. Make it 2 feet deep under roads. Keep the sides of the ditch smooth. Take out any sharp rocks you find.

Putting in the Wire

Unroll the wire slowly so it doesn’t twist. Keep it tight as you put it in. When you need to turn, make wide gentle bends. Keep the wire close to the pipe it’s marking.

Connecting the Wire

Use special waterproof connectors. Peel the covering carefully without cutting the wire. Twist the wires together tight. Cover the connection completely. Test each one when done.

Marking Your Work

Put strong markers at both ends. Add more markers every 100 feet. Write down where they are. Take pictures of important spots. Make a final map when finished.

Filling the Trench

Put dirt back in small amounts. Pack it down lightly. Lay warning tape above the wire. Try to make the ground look like before.

Testing the Wire

Check if the signal works all along the wire. Make sure locating tools can find it. Write down your test results.

Common Problems
Watch out for these mistakes:

  • Ditch not deep enough
  • Bad connections
  • Not enough markers
  • Wire bent too sharp
  • Forgetting to take pictures

Keeping It Working
Check everything after 6 months. Look at markers each year. Do full tests every 3-5 years. Update your records if you fix anything.

Staying Safe
Always wear your safety gear. Use safe tools when near other wires. Stay away from other buried things. Be careful in small spaces.

Fixing Issues
If the signal stops:

  1. Check all connections
  2. Look for broken spots
  3. Try different tools
  4. Check for rust or damage

Checking Your Work
Sometimes look at:

  • How well it was put in
  • If the signal stays strong
  • If all papers are complete
  • How workers are doing

Special Cases
For tough places:

  • Use pipes in rocky ground
  • Bury deeper where floods happen
  • Add more markers in empty areas
  • Use bright tags in cities

Finishing Up
When done:

  • Fill out warranty papers
  • Show the owner how it works
  • Give them all the records
  • Write a final report
